7 Things to Consider When Relocating for a Job

7 Things to Consider When Relocating for a Job by Ela Moscicka. Helping you build & navigate a career in tech: elaintech.com

I was right after the career change (you can read all about my journey in this article: “My journey into Software Engineering role at Microsoft – No CS degree”) and while this was the middle of a pandemic, we decided to pack our life and move to Prague.

But I didn’t limit myself just to that! I spoke with a lot of people who made a move, read many articles (for Czechia I’d recommend you to visit https://www.expats.cz/) as well and did calculations using information from e.g. Numbeo: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/ (website which provides details on costs of living worldwide).

You might not like it there, or you might realize that the costs of living are too high (that was my case, you can read more about the details here).

  1. Nice article, thanks Ela.
I would add one more thing – study the tax system. It will be different in the other country. Also, you will have to deal with two tax systems in a single tax year when you are relocating in the middle of the year – that will make your situation quite unique, making any generally available advice or peers’ experiences not applicable to your case. Last but not least, you might want to align your assets before you move. You will need a tax advisor. Will that be a part of your relocation package?
